The Key Group has announced a significant leadership change, with Arbor co-founder and CEO James Weatherill appointed as Group CEO, succeeding Chris Kenyon, who moves into the role of Chair.
The appointment sees one of the best-known figures in the UK school MIS market take responsibility for the wider Group at an important point in its growth and development.
Kenyon has led The Key Group for the past seven and a half years, during which time the organisation says it has grown from 110 to more than 700 employees. The Group’s portfolio has also expanded significantly, encompassing Arbor alongside The Key, GovernorHub, SAMpeople, TimeTabler and other education technology products and services.
Arbor itself has experienced particularly rapid growth and, according to The Key Group, is now used by more than 13,000 schools.
Weatherill co-founded Arbor and has led the company through its development from an MIS challenger into one of the UK’s largest school management information system providers.
Commenting on his appointment, Weatherill said:
“Chris has built something remarkable and I am hugely grateful for the foundation he leaves behind. I am excited to take on this role at such a pivotal moment for the Group and for the education sector more widely. We have real momentum and I am looking forward to working with the incredible people we have to build on that success in the years ahead.”
Kenyon will remain closely involved as Chair, working with Weatherill and the wider leadership team on the Group’s future direction.
Permira investment sets the backdrop
The leadership transition comes less than a year after global investment firm Permira acquired a majority stake in The Key Group from CBPE Capital in November 2025.
At the time of the transaction, The Key Group said that its partnership with Permira would enable it to double its investment in research and development over the following few years, with a particular focus on using AI to save school staff time and improve student insight.
Permira also highlighted The Key Group’s product leadership and data capabilities as areas for further investment.
This provides an interesting backdrop to Weatherill’s appointment. Having overseen Arbor’s rapid development and growth, he now takes responsibility for a much broader portfolio at a time when substantial additional investment is planned in products, technology and AI.
The WhichMIS? view
For the MIS market, this is more than simply a change of CEO.
James Weatherill has been closely associated with Arbor’s strategy and rapid growth from challenger MIS to one of the dominant platforms in the English schools market. His appointment to lead the whole of The Key Group therefore comes at a particularly interesting point in the Group’s development.
The combination of Weatherill’s appointment and Permira’s commitment to double R&D investment also raises some interesting questions about what comes next.
The Key Group has steadily broadened its portfolio beyond the core MIS into areas including finance, HR, governance, compliance, timetabling, workflow and AI-enabled services. At the same time, Arbor has increasingly become the platform around which many of these services can potentially be connected.
For schools and MATs, the question will therefore be whether the next phase sees Arbor evolve further from being principally an MIS into the centre of a much broader school technology ecosystem.
There is also a wider market implication. With significant investment promised in R&D and AI, competitors across the UK MIS sector will be watching closely to see where that investment is directed and what it means for Arbor’s product roadmap.
At WhichMIS?, we’ll be particularly interested to see how much of the promised investment translates into development of the core MIS, how rapidly AI becomes embedded within everyday school management processes, and how closely The Key Group’s wider portfolio becomes integrated around Arbor.
Whatever direction the Group takes, the combination of new leadership and increased investment suggests that the next stage of Arbor’s development could be every bit as significant as the growth that has established it as one of the UK’s leading school MIS platforms.
